Who We Are.
Numerical Technologies is a cutting-edge financial risk management software company and a consulting firm that specializes in high performance computing (HPC), parallel Monte Carlo simulation, and financial modeling.
Founded in 1998, Numerical Technologies is a leading software company in financial risk management in Japan and counts the country’s top-tier banks and insurance firms as its long-term partners. In October 2010, Numerical Technologies established an office in Singapore to advance its software development and R&D capabilities, and to pursue growth opportunities outside Japan.
A finance professional with a computer architect’s soul, Hideyuki Torii founded Numerical Technologies in 1998 to cater to the unique risk management needs of Japanese financial institutions. He currently serves as President of Numerical Technologies (Tokyo) and Managing Director of Numerical Technologies (Singapore).
Prior to establishing Numerical Technologies, Mr. Torii worked at Sumitomo Bank and Goldman Sachs & Co. (New York) where he gained invaluable experience in the areas of fixed-income trading, middle-office management, risk management, and ALM system architecture. As a veteran, he has witnessed a number of black swans, from the 1987 Black Monday to the recent financial crisis.
Mr. Torii has shown great interest in physics and mathematics as a child, and was greatly fascinated by the Apollo 11 mission. Later, inspired by the visions of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, he enrolled at the University of Tokyo’s premiere Computer Science program. Mr. Torii is a marathon and ultra-marathon runner; some of his favorite races are the Honolulu Marathon, Tokyo Marathon, and the grueling Fuji Mountain Race.

Previously, Mr. Hirano was a Global Account Sales Manager (Financial Sales Group) at Digital Equipment Corporation handling a number of Digital’s major Japanese clients in the financial sector. It is in Digital that he gained exposure to VAX R&D and understood the importance of honesty in building lasting relationships. Ken Olsen, Digital Equipment Corporation founder, believed and often said that honesty is the bedrock of a person’s values.
Mr. Hirano graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Commercial Arts from the Department of Business Management at Yokohama City University. In his free time, he can be seen playing football with other Tokyo residents or off-road biking on his favorite bike, a Camber FSR 29er.
